Eat, Fast and live longer…!

Fasting

Fasting has a great history and has been a very prominent ritual since ages in my religion and country. In Hinduism, each day of a week corresponds to a god (like Sunday for lord Surya (sun); Monday for lord Siva,…) and it is common that people fast that day in the name of that god…

In ‘Ayurveda‘, I heard a statement – “Langanam Parama Aushadham”, which means Fasting is the Best Medicine

I always had a thought that Science with no negatives becomes a part of religion and thus is practiced as a culture

well, yesterday, I was searching for some information on a topic and accidentally came across a BBC Horizon documentary on fasting – Eat, Fast and Live Longer

In there, they enumerated various advantages of fasting, various scientific ways to fast in order to get the most out of it and insisted on 5:2 mode of diet. i.e., 5 days of normal diet and 2 days of fasting in every week, the easiest of all forms of fasting that were discussed in the movie…

I came to know that this issue is under serious research and they say that it is very effective in controlling blood cholesterol levels (reduces LDL, triglycerides and rises HDL), maintains minimal levels of endogenous substances with significant role in cancer like IGF-1, slows down the process of aging, reduction in body weight to some extent, decreases hypertension and increases Insulin Sensitivity (against type-II Diabetes), delays the deterioration of brain cells… Thus, it promises to postpone any life style and aging complications…

After watching, I felt enormously happy for two reasons… First that I was right about our culture and second that something which is being considered as latest science in western world is known in our country for centuries, and is embedded into our belief system so deep that with out the knowledge of science behind it, we have been enjoying the benefits…

So far, I practiced fasting a few times and felt really light and more active those days, despite the fact that I didn’t eat that day… Of course, my fasting has always involved fruits and milk instead of completely abstaining from food…

I strongly look forward to practicing the 5:2 fasting mode at least once a month and improve my health and living…
