Pharmacology is one of my favorite subjects in the whole of my B.Pharmacy course… It was day-before-yesterday, 10-07-2012, when I first stepped into our Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory. The feeling was great… I was enjoying the whole thing to the peaks…
My lecturer started to explain the purpose of our study, what we will be doing there, and all that… It was really exciting…
The day’s experiment was “To Study The Mydriatic (Dilation of Pupil) and Miotic (Constriction of Pupil) Effects of Drugs“… This is to be studied on an animal model… The one chosen was a Rabbit…
I myself went to the animal house and brought the rabbit to laboratory… I felt like it was shivering, may be out of fear :-(… I placed it in the Rabbit-Box in such a way that its head is free to move a little bit… We took the solutions of drugs and placed little amounts in both the eyes, took the measurements of the pupil size at an interval of 10min for 1hr (till it came back to normal)…
Looking at the rabbit like that, all my joy slipped off… I felt like all of this was going in a wrong way… Yes! It is going wrong… Still, many hundreds of such animals are being killed and subjected to a lot of pain in the name of Drug Testing, Pre-Clinical Trials, ect…
Every cosmetic product needs to be tested before it is made available in the market for human use… and those are tested on shaved calf and rabbit skin… If that doesn’t produce any irritation, it can be used by us… So is with every other medicine that we are using to live through our lives comfortably…
In some countries like India, even humans are being treated like that by some MNCs… Many issues have been recorded in the past few years on Clinical Trails of un-approved drugs, without the consent of the person (mainly on illiterates)… In most cases led to sore results…
Apart from so many regulatory boards nationally and internationally, some flaws and un-necessary pain on life forms is un-avoidable…
However, Pre-clinical and Clinical studies are a must in development of any new drug form and there is no doubt about that… But,I wish there is a better way to do this… With the computers and other technology available, we are able to test the potency of even Nuclear Weapons in simulated conditions, without actually deploying them… Use of such systems (Computerized simulation of in-vivo conditions or the use of organs and tissues developed from stem-cells, etc) can really be helpful in exponentially decreasing the number of animals and humans required for testing and any possible flaw in the process…
Well, I am at the beginning of my semester and still have to continue the tests on a few more rabbits, some frogs and mice… At present, I am helpless and can only extend my serious apologies to all those animals…! 😦
